2017-18 has been another productive and exciting year for the Youth in Philanthropy club at ABRHS (a program of AB United Way). It started in the spring of 2017 with the much anticipated “Bring Your Daughter Dance – A Night In Paris” (formerly the Daddy-Daughter Dance).  Besides being our largest fundraiser, elementary-aged girls and their adult date had a wonderful time doing arts and crafts, decorating and eating cupcakes, and, of course, dancing the night away to tunes old and new.

The fall brought new members to YIP and a core group of dedicated returning members, as well.  We spent these months learning about community needs, assessing our own priorities, sending out RFPs, reading through and evaluating grant proposals and, of course, more fundraising. We are grateful to the Stone Family Foundation who continues to support our efforts through a generous yearly grant and to our private donors, who, through their sponsorship, help to inspire our members to work hard towards our goal of supporting local non-profits.  In addition to the financial support we received, YIP members, themselves, raised $6400 from our various fundraising endeavors.

Through the efforts of our supporters and the members of YIP, we were able to fund 5 local non-profits this year. The decision process on which of the organizations we ultimately support is a very difficult one, but, one that the students work through thoughtfully and respectfully. Below, please find the 2017-2018 YIP grant recipients:

Boxborough Conservation Trust - $2000 to help build a bridge and stairs for a safe path along Depot Rd.

English At Large - $2000 for volunteer training and education

ABHL Early Childhood Council - $2000 supporting pre-school tuition assistance

Minuteman Arc - $2150 for funding their adult choir program

Open Door Theater - $900 for assisted listening devices

We ended this year’s grant cycle with a “grant reveal” celebration in February. We hosted the grant recipients, members of ABUW, school administrators, YIP parents and community members. The students gave presentations recapping our year and announcing the organizations we chose to support.

YIP has already started to look ahead to the 2018-19 school year.  We are in the preparation stages of this year’s “Bring Your Daughter Dance – Somewhere Over the Rainbow” which will be held in the high school cafeteria on Friday, May 4th from 7 pm to 9 pm. Download a copy of the flier here.
